Mayor Stephen Maher is a 13-year resident of Waxhaw. He was appointed as a Commissioner to the Town Board in July 2014, and elected as Mayor in November 2015. Prior to being appointed to Commissioner and member of Waxhaw's Town Board, he served Waxhaw and its citizens on Waxhaw's Planning Board and Waxhaw's Park & Recreation Advisory Board.
Mayor Maher is currently in his second term as a member of the Risk Management Services Board of Trustees, an insurance pools organization of the North Carolina League of Municipalities that provides a full set of insurance coverage options for North Carolina’s local government entities. Mayor Maher is in his second year as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Mayor Maher and his wife, Shavaun, have three children, and 3 grandchildren. Their youngest child is in her second year at Appalachian State University.
Mayor Maher has been active in the Union County school system, having served Kensington Elementary in several roles including Treasurer of the schools PTO. He also served 4 years at Cuthbertson High School as a member of the site-based management team, a group of faculty, parents, administrative personnel, and business/community members who are involved in the management and decision-making process at Cuthbertson High School.
