Now Hiring - Planning and Inspections Director

The Town of Waxhaw is seeking a well-rounded, highly skilled professional for the position of Planning and Inspections Director. Incorporated in 1889, Waxhaw has a long and rich history. Located approximately 20 miles south of Charlotte, Waxhaw remained a distant suburb for most of its history. During the last 10 plus years, the growth to the Charlotte area has attracted a lot more people to relocate to Waxhaw. Over the last decade the town’s population has grown by 100%. It is anticipated that the 2020 Census numbers will show a population of approximately 20,000. Waxhaw is a thriving community and is the only town in western Union County that provides a full allotment of municipal services, including: police, street maintenance, trash and recycling pickup, parks and recreation, building inspections, engineering, and of course, planning and zoning among others. The town has worked on updating its growth strategy; the nearly 2-year project is set to be complete in March with adoption of a new zoning code. The new code and maps were written and developed in house. The new director will have the opportunity to work and mentor a talented planning staff as well as a top-notch inspections program. The new director must have expert knowledge of planning and zoning administration and working knowledge of the North Carolina Building Code. It is expected that the new director will serve as Zoning Administrator. The ideal candidate must have exceptional leadership skills, ability to handle complex projects, and know when to delegate appropriately. The director should be approachable and have strong project management, communication, and presentation skills. Experience in a community that has managed significant growth is desired. Experience with implementing a freshly adopted zoning code is also a plus.  Must be able to foster and maintain good relationships with staff, other agencies, partners, and the community with an open-minded manner, effective communication and collaboration skills, while consistently using good judgement.  Salary is negotiable.  Please submit resume, cover letter and complete application by going to  The full job description and requirements can also be accessed online.  Waxhaw is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
