Mayor's Recap June 11th BOC Meeting

The Waxhaw Board of Commissioners conducted a regular meeting on Tuesday June 11, 2019.

The meeting began with recognition for the Town of Waxhaw. The Town of Waxhaw is the recipient of the North Carolina Excellence in Communication Award for our 8-week citizen engagement program, Waxhaw 101.  Additionally, The Town of Waxhaw and our Police Department each received the North Carolina Department of Labor Safety & Health Achievement Award. This is the town’s 8th consecutive year and the Police Department’s 9th consecutive year in receiving this award. Congratulations to our entire staff for these well-deserved recognitions.

The business portion of the meeting focused on four topical areas: economic development, financial stewardship, transportation and quality of life.

With economic development, the Board:

  • Discussed and finalized the town’s overarching goals to optimize downtown’s real estate.

With financial stewardship, the Board:

  • Conducted a public hearing on the proposed FY2020 Annual Budget.
  • Approved an updated purchasing policy to provide additional safeguards;
  • Approved polices and procedures commonly referred to as “uniform guidance”  that are required to be in place for Waxhaw to participate in any federal assistance programs
  • Approved the contract to conduct and complete our audit for fiscal year ending June 30, 2019.

With transportation, the Board:

  • Received and discussed the Union County Critical Intersection analysis report that identifies the top 15 county wide critical intersections based upon congestion and safety across Union County. This report will be utilized to advance regional intersection improvements with NCDOT.
  • Received staff recommendations for sidewalks and multi-use pathways on the Waxhaw Marvin Corridor,
  • Received and provided final input on an update and revisions  to Waxhaw’s traffic calming program

With quality of life, the Board:

  • Adopted the Parks and Recreation Strategic Master Plan: 2019-2028. This new plan will guide the Town’s park and recreational investments for the next 10 years and updates the current plan that had been guiding the Town since 2012.
