Waxhaw Butterfly Project – Rotating Public Art

This project must be completed by an interested party, willing to shoulder the cost of the materials, yet certain standards of materials must be met.
In appreciation of the selected artist(s), a plaque will be displayed at the site for artist recognition, and a Press Release will be posted to the media to publicize the completion of the project. This will be an annual renewable art project for the Town of Waxhaw.
Request for Proposals (RFP) Deadline: September 9, 2024
ELIGIBILITY
This RFP is open to all practicing artists, professional artists OR any group which would like to paint the Waxhaw Butterfly. Experience in public art is desirable but not required.
DESCRIPTION
The Town of Waxhaw is seeking qualified artist(s) interested in painting or creating a unique and interesting design on our downtown metal butterfly statue. The Waxhaw Butterfly Project should remain relevant to the overall essence of community. This can be approached abstractly or literally. Artists of all media are encouraged to apply. Downtown Waxhaw is a vital center of community activity, and we would like all residents and visitors to aesthetically enjoy their experience while walking the main shopping area.
BUDGET
The Town of Waxhaw will pay for the plaque which states who the commissioning entity is. All expenses, including the priming and painting of the stainless steel sculpture, will be the responsibility of the selected artist party.

Call to Artists: May 28, 2024
Application Deadline: August 9, 2024
Review Applications: August 14, 2024
BOC Approval: August 27, 2024 or September 10, 2024
Artist(s) Notified of Award by September 13, 2024
Painting Completed by October 12, 2024
HOW TO SUBMIT
Please submit an application (found at the link below) which will include the following items:
- Cover letter stating interest in the project, approach to public art which may highlight any relevant past experience, and a list of materials to be used.
- A color representation of the proposed project.
- Photos of past work.
Applications must be received by the Town by or before August 9, 2024. Please email your application with "Waxhaw Butterfly Project" in the subject line and addressed to Dena Sabinske, Director of Parks & Recreation, Town of Waxhaw, dsabinske@waxhaw.com.
